Windfield

Terms of use

These are the terms for using Windfield. By using the site you accept them. They are meant to be read; if something here is unclear, ask through the contact page below. Effective 19 October 2026.

The service

Windfield is a free web application, with no account, built and run by SummitFlux. It is provided as is, with no promise that it will be available, accurate or uninterrupted, and it may change or stop at any time.

Modelled wind is an estimate

Windfield is a diagnostic model, not a forecast or a safety-of-life instrument. Results depend on the input wind; transport and derived layers are estimates. Do not use it as the sole basis for a decision where someone could be hurt. See How it works for the method and its limits.

Fair use

The service is small and shared, so it has limits that apply to everyone. The API reports them live at /api/v1/health. Today they are:

  • an area up to 400 km across;
  • up to 225,000 mesh cells in one run;
  • up to 20 runs waiting in the queue;
  • up to 2 runs in progress or waiting from one IP address at a time.

The momentum solver has lower limits than these.

Please do not try to get around these limits, overload the service, probe it for weaknesses, or use it to attack other sites. Requests that exceed a limit are refused.

Shared links

A shared map is reached through a link. Anyone who has the view link can see the map, and anyone who has the edit link can change it or stop sharing it. Keep an edit link as private as you want the map to stay editable. A shared map is deleted after 90 days without anyone opening it. Do not put anything in a shared map that you do not want others with the link to see.

Your content

Windfield processes and stores the areas, marks and files you provide as described on the Privacy page. Do not upload anything you have no right to use, or anything unlawful.

Licence and data sources

The Windfield application code is proprietary to SummitFlux LLC. The JSON API may be used with the attribution "Windfield by SummitFlux, powered by USFS WindNinja". The solvers, weather, terrain and map data come from other organisations that keep their own licences and terms, described on Credits. Their terms apply to what you do with their data.

Changes

If these terms change, this page is updated with a new effective date. Windfield has no accounts or email list, so this page is the only place changes are announced. Using the site after a change means you accept the new terms.

Contact

For questions about these terms, contact SummitFlux. SummitFlux's own company terms are separate.
