Accessibility
Windfield targets WCAG 2.2 level AA in both the light and dark themes. This covers the whole site: the map and its tools, the panels, the 3D view and these pages.
What is built in
- Keyboard access. Every control is reachable with Tab in reading order and shows a 2 px focus ring. A skip link jumps to the content. Escape closes overlays, leaves tools and exits the 3D view. ? lists all shortcuts.
- No drag-only actions (WCAG 2.5.7). The area's resize handles and move chip take arrow keys (50 m per step, 250 m with Shift), and its bounds can be typed. Structures and Lab objects move with arrow keys (1 m, 5 m with Shift); their size, rotation and height can be typed.
- Colour is never the only signal. Run state is written out above the Run button. Rising and sinking particles differ in shape as well as colour. Result marks contrast with the current basemap by default and can be set by hand.
- Reduced motion. With
prefers-reduced-motionset, transitions and animations are removed. - Screen-reader announcements. A polite live region reports when a run starts, its progress, when it completes or fails, and when a result goes out of date. Errors are marked as alerts.
- Touch targets. Controls are at least 44 × 44 px at phone widths and 28 px elsewhere.
- Contrast tokens. Both themes draw from one set of colour tokens chosen for AA contrast. The theme can be switched in the header and is remembered.
How it is tested
- Automated checks. axe-core 4.10.2 runs the WCAG 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2 A/AA rules on every page and the main app states, in both themes. Any violation, of any impact, fails the build.
- Keyboard tests. End-to-end tests draw, move and resize the area and structures from the keyboard alone, and confirm Tab reaches every link with a visible focus ring.
- Measured layout checks. Every page and opened state is captured at widths from 1440 to 360 px in both themes. A script checks each visible control for size, overlap, clipping, text under 11 px and horizontal scroll.
