Privacy
Windfield has no accounts. It sets no cookies of its own and runs no analytics or tracking. This page lists what it does send, store and share, and for how long. Effective 19 October 2026.
Who runs it
Windfield is built and run by SummitFlux, the same company named on the About page.
What is collected, and why
- Place search
- The text you type in the search box, and the coordinates of a place you ask to be named, go to Windfield so it can look the place up. Used to find the place.
- Run inputs
- When you press Run, the area, wind, solver, structures and other settings you chose go to Windfield. Used to compute your wind field.
- Map layers
- Turning on weather, stations, hazards, buildings, climate, aircraft or similar layers sends the coordinates or area on screen. Used to fetch those layers.
- 3D models
- A 3D model file you upload in the Lab is sent to Windfield. Used to build your Lab run.
- Shared maps
- If you choose to share marks, their positions, types, colours and names go to Windfield. Used to let people with the link see or edit them. The secret in the edit link is sent only in the request that proves you hold it, and Windfield keeps just a one-way hash of it.
- Your IP address
- Windfield sees the IP address of every request. It is used to apply the fair-use limits, and it is saved with each run you start so those limits can be counted.
- Your location
- If you allow location, your browser reads your position for the map. It is not sent to Windfield by itself. A track you record is saved on your device and is sent only if you share those marks.
How long it is kept
- Runs and their files: a finished run is deleted from the server 5 minutes after it was last viewed, and in any case 24 hours after it was started. A run that is still queued or running is kept until it ends. The saved IP address goes with the run.
- Run event record: a short record of each run's status changes, without your IP address, deleted with the run and in any case 24 hours after it was written.
- Uploaded 3D models: deleted 15 minutes after last use, and at most 3 hours after upload.
- Shared maps: deleted 90 days after anyone last opened or changed them, or at once when someone with the edit link chooses Stop sharing (backup copies expire within 14 days, below).
- Place-search cache: the search text and results are cached for up to 7 days.
- Weather cache: provider answers for rounded coordinates are cached for up to 4 hours.
- Server logs: the web server keeps an access log of requests. It records each request's address, including any search text or coordinates in it, along with connection details. It is rolled at 10 MiB and the last 3 files are kept. The application also logs each request it answers, with the request's address (including any search text or coordinates) and your IP address, to the server's system journal, whose retention Windfield does not set.
- Backups: the server's database is backed up once a night, encrypted. A backup holds whatever was stored at that moment (runs with their IP address, shared maps, the caches), and the 14 most recent nightly backups are kept (about 14 days), so a deleted item can remain in a backup for about 14 days after it is deleted.
Who receives data
Directly from your browser. Map tiles and some overlays are loaded by your browser straight from their providers, so each one sees your IP address, your browser details and the tiles you view. The default map is from Esri; the others are used only when you switch that layer on: USGS, OpenStreetMap, OpenTopoMap, CyclOSM, Waymarked Trails, OpenSnowMap, Iowa Environmental Mesonet, the US Bureau of Land Management, the US Forest Service, Macrostrat, NOAA, and Amazon Web Services for elevation tiles. Credits describes many of these providers.
From the Windfield server. To answer a request the server asks data providers for the place text, coordinates or area involved. It sends its own identification, not your IP address or browser details. The providers it asks include OpenStreetMap (place search and buildings), Open-Meteo, NOAA services, Synoptic Data, Amazon Web Services elevation data, ESA WorldCover, USGS LANDFIRE, adsb.lol, NIFC and avalanche.org; Credits describes many of them.
Cloudflare. Cloudflare delivers the site, so it handles every request and sees visitors' IP addresses under its own policies.
Windfield does not sell data or share it for advertising.
What stays on your device
Windfield stores these in your browser, and nowhere else unless you share them: your theme and navigation choices, coordinate format, motion setting, guided-tour progress, chosen weather networks, the last 20 run settings, your own marks, saved offline map areas and tiles, the id and edit link of a shared map you created, and the app's own files so it opens offline. Clearing this site's data in your browser removes all of it.
Cookies and tracking
Windfield sets no cookies and has no analytics, advertising or tracking scripts. The providers and Cloudflare named above act under their own policies.
Your choices
- Shared map: open it with its edit link and choose Stop sharing to delete it for everyone. Without the edit link, contact SummitFlux with the map link.
- Anything else we hold about you: ask what is held, or ask for it to be deleted, through the contact page. Give the run link or shared-map link if you have one, because Windfield has no account to look you up by.
- Local data: clear this site's data in your browser settings.
Changes
If this notice changes, this page is updated with a new effective date. Windfield has no accounts or email list, so this page is the only place changes are announced.
